The newest kid on the Hong Kong desserts block, Hee Kee (囍记) which means “treasuring happiness” opens at Jurong Point.
Hee Kee Desserts is an original store conceptualised by the very team behind the popular bubble tea franchise, Sharetea. I was invited for a media session to taste several of their menu top selections. Being a 'cheena' girl - I jumped at the opportunity. All my good friends know I love Chinese desserts, plus my saying goes "I have a separate drawer in my stomach for desserts"~ haha. My father used to buy chinese desserts (as breakfast) for me on a daily basis when I was a young child. At that time, it was either tau suan or black glutinous rice :P
Plus having stayed in Hong Kong before, I wanted to see how Hee Kee introduces tong sui desserts here in Singapore.
My verdict - a pretty interesting menu including well-prepared traditional hot favourites like Traditional Steamed Milk Pudding (house specialty) and new desserts to suit the evolving palattes such as Mango Cheong Fun of huge chunks of fresh mangoes wrapped in rice rolls. Worth a visit if you are in the area :)
I did wish I would get to taste more traditional items from the menu during the tasting session, but hey, there is always round 2 when I visit again :)
My recommendation is definitely the milk pudding!
Traditional Steamed Milk Pudding $3.50
This milk pudding lived up to its name as house specialty, and it is something I would definitely order again. The milk pudding was so smooth, soft and silky that it kept gliding off the spoon (woo!). The milk fragrance was also distinct but yet not too overpowering, and I like that the steamed pudding was served hot.
Homemade Beancurd with Gula Melaka $3.30
This dish was quite a let down, especially when it was after I have tasted their milk pudding. The beancurd was not exceptionally smooth or fragrant and the gula melaka felt rather diluted and I could not actually tell that it was gula melaka. Overall this dish was rather lacklustre. I say, save your stomach for their other yummy desserts.
Whole Coconut with Coconut Ice Cream and Peanut Crush $8.80
With a $8.80 price tag, one would expect quite a bit from this dish. Luckily it was pretty delectable. with generous serving of rich creamy coconut ice cream and coconut flesh. A glass of coconut juice drink was also served alongside. The peanut bits added that needed crunch and give a good balance with the creamy flavours.
Mango Cheong Fun $3.30 per piece
This Mango Cheong Fun was surprised me with the silky rice roll and generous amounts of mango. This item will robably will go well with those who prefer cold desserts and a more 'innovative' twist to chinese desserts. A tad high price tag though.
Durian Pancake $3.30
A hearty combination of rich durian puree and light whipped cream, wrapped in coconut infused pancake skin. The skin was really thin and soft and the whipped cream was nice and light. Durian lovers will love the generous durian flesh used in this dessert dish.
