People couldn't believe it that I said I would travel all the way to a shopping mall just because a Japanese supermarket opened. Well, I did!! It is not just any supermarket, it is Isetan!! A well known Japanese department store with a long history in Japan.
Isetan just recently opened its doors at the newest mall at Jurong East, the Westgate. At a whopping 60,000 ft space, Isetan gives you cosmetics and ladies shoes at Level 1; Fashion, Travel, Household and others at Basement 1 and the Supermarket at Basement 2.
The entire concept was to follow much closer to the Japan model. And if you know of the famous Japanese deepachika, you will be happy to know arrays of amazing food, fresh produce awaits you at basement 2.
I was so excited!! Suddenly I am envious of my friends living in the West! haha. Oh well, I guess I will still be going to their outlet in Orchard more often since that is nearer my home.
But here is a overview of my 2 hours spent at the Isetan Supermarket!
First, getting to Westgate is super easy. Alight at Jurong East train station, as you exit the ticketing counters, turn right and it will lead you straight into the mall. Westgate is just adjacent to Jems.
Look for Isetan on Level 1, enter and move 2 levels down the escalator and it will bring you to Isetan Supermarket.
There are just so many things, Bacchus Wine Shop, Seasonal Sweets section, Nagomi Deli section, J Dining section, Fuji Flower Style, Coffee Station by Japanese coffee brand UCC, huge market event area (much bigger than Orchard's one), Market Studio and Fish Studio.
Here are the tempting photos:
On the same floor, there are even laundry services, delivery services and the customer service counter.
Remember to also check out the famous Johan Paris Bakery (first in Singapore)!
I bought their popular bread that included Corn Pan, Nihonbashi Roll (Brown Sugar Bun), Breakfast Bun which consist of tomato dough topped with spinach and sausage.
Their Corn Pan (literally means corn bread) is the number one selling in Japan. So I grabbed two of those.
The buns were really chewy and soft, like how the Japanese makes their bread. The corn pan is actually just only mildly sweet. Pretty good!
Their baquette was also really good (there was tasting session), really crusty on the outside and soft on the inside.
Now... It is time to go Isetan and Johan Paris! Have a great J-shopping!
