Forgot to set my alarm clock this morning was woke up pretty late (good for my flu though :P). Managed to quickly put together another Hina-matsuri Bento for lunch today.
Inspired by my instagram friend Eliza (@panda1971) who cooked purple rice, I decided to make some purple rice too. She had prepared her rice by using purple carrots, I used purple sweet potato as I could not get purple carrots at the supermarket last night. I boiled about 1.5 cups of water with one purple sweet potato (peeled and sliced). After which, I used the water to cook the rice. The cooked rice had a really sweet purple hue.
I think that the purple rice went quite well in this Hina-matsuri bento, what do you think?
I used quail eggs to make the Emperor and Empress hina ningyo dolls.
Quail egg is a fun and versatile ingredient for character bento making. If you have been following my blog, you might recall the kawaii matryoshka dolls quail egg bento that I made earlier (read post here).
The ingredients for the hina ningyo dolls in this bento were:
Emperor - hard boiled quail egg, blue coloring, green egg sheet, seaweed, cheese, pink gel
Empress - hard boiled quail egg, pink coloring, yellow egg sheet, seaweed, cheese, pink gel
The side dishes for this bento were pan grilled chicken fillet, sauteed asparagus with garlic, shiitake mushrooms and lettuce.
Have a good week ahead everyone. Once my flu clears, I will be doing a tutorial on the apple carving that many have been asking for. Stay tuned!
