As promised, here is the tutorial for the apple carving.
I know some of you have seen my earlier bento creations (like the Teddy Bear Bread Bento, the Keroppi Bento and the Little Twin Stars Bento) and many have asked how I did the apple carving. So I hope you will like this tutorial!
Get creative with this tutorial, the apple carving design can be changed as you like. :)
I posted the recipe in both video and written form. This is my very first video (arghhh i still don't like listening to my own voice). Sorry for the editing, still very very new at video editing.
You can also scroll down to read the written tutorial guide with step by step pictorial tutorial.
Have fun and thanks for coming by my blog.
Apple Carving Tutorial for Bento
We are going to learn to make 2 designs. First is the checkered pattern (right) and the second is a variation of the checkered pattern with some flora shapes (left).
- gala apple
- 2 tsp lemon juice
- a good sharp knife
- cutting board
- bowl
- small spray bottle (recommended but you can make do without)
- mini metal cutter (for Design 2)
Preparation
Halve the apple, and remove the core. Place them in a bowl of water and 1 tsp of lemon juice. Add some water in the spray bottle and 1 tsp of lemon juice, set aside.
Design 1 - Checkered pattern
1) Cut vertical lines along the curve of the apple. The distance between them should be about 0.5 cm2) Cut horizontal lines across, this creates a checkered pattern as seen below
3) You can stop and spray some lemon juice here on the apple. This prevents discoloration.
4) Using your knife, remove alternating pieces to create the pattern.5) If you find that you work slow, stop and spray some lemon juice
6) Complete the entire apple halve and here is the pretty checkered pattern :)
Design 2 - Checkered pattern variation with flora cuts
1) You will need a mini metal cutter for this. It be of other shapes.2) Press the cutter into the apple, repeat to create the pattern. I repeated it vertically 4 times.
3) Create checkered pattern at the right and left sides next to the flora cuts. Similar to Design 1, cut vertical and horizontal lines to create the checkered pattern.
4) Remove the apple skin around the flora cuts and also the alternating pieces of the checkered cuts. Remember to stop and spray the apple with some lemon juice to help prevent discoloration.
5) Repeat until you have complete the apple halve. :) ta-daaah, now it is done!
I hope you enjoy this tutorial. Have fun in your bento making!
