Peko-chan is the female mascot of the Milky Candy from Fujiya, Japan. Peko-chan with her cute little pigtails is popular in Japan, there is even dedicated character stores. I spotted one at Tokyo JR Station, along the Character Street.
Ever since I bought the Peko-chan bento baran sheets, I had wanted to try making this character for my bento. Finally did it today!
Last night, while shopping at the supermarket, I was thrilled to find Japanese red cherries! I have been seeing photos of them online, posted by my Japanese friends and they look so pretty and sweet tasting! These Japanese cherries are smaller than the usual ones we see at supermarket. They are smaller, lighter in color and redder in tone.
Somehow buying those cherries made me think of making Peko-chan. In this bento, she is looking at the sweet delicious cherries and smacking her lips! heheh. Peko-chan is entirely edible, and was made from chicken ham, picnic ham, seaweed, kani kamaboko and aburaage.
*kani kamaboko is imitation crabstick
*aburaage is fried tofu pockets, the ones used in inari sushi
To make Peko-chan, I sketched out the design. I then used some baking paper to trace the different layers and subsequently cut out the parts using the different ingredients.
Peko-chan is on some pepperoni and mushroom pasta, at the side I have some sauteed broccoli and carrots, and some of the lovely Japanese cherries I bought!
Hope this bento cheers up your Monday morning - have a good week ahead!
