| Summer Festival Girl Bento 夏祭り・少女のキャラベン |
Summer time is the season that Japanese love their festivals and celebrate their traditions. There are many summer festivals in the months of July and August. The festivals allow you to enjoy the authentic culture of Japan. So if you are visiting Japan in August, there will be opportunities to attend some of these festivals.
I personally have only read and seen the sights of these beautiful summer festival outside Japan, one day, I hope I can attend an actual one in Japan!
For this summer festival girl bento, the side dishes were oven baked chicken wings, broccoli, sauteed garlic mushrooms and tofu, lettuce, cucumber.
I made the girl character wear an anpanman mask :) It is very common to see many plastic masks of the popular characters sold at the summer festivals. It is popular with children but many adults are also seen having fun with the masks.
At the side, there is also a small bowl featuring kingyo sukui, or goldfish scooping. This is actually a traditional game played at summer festival where one pays for a net to scoop up goldfishes. it is not easy as the net is actually made of paper! Unfortunately, at the summer festival event I attended, due to AVA regulations, the game was cancelled this year.
The ingredients for the characters were:
- Girl with Anpanman mask (rice, soy sauce, seaweed, egg sheet, crabstick, furikake, carrot)
- Watermelon slice (cucumber, crabstick, black sesame seeds)
- Goldfish Scooping Game (rice noodles, carrots)

少女はアンパンマンのお面をかぶっています。笑～～ 夏祭りでたくさんのかわいいお面が売りました。
キャラベンのおかず：鶏手羽肉甘辛焼き、キノコと豆腐ソテー、ブロッコリー、レタス、キュウリ。
キャラクターの部分
少女（飯、海苔、醤油、薄焼き卵、かに蒲鉾、人参）
スイカ（キュウリ、かに蒲鉾、黒ゴマ）
金魚すくい（人参、薄焼き卵、海藻麺）

Many have also asked me where I got my wooden/traditional bento boxes. The one used here is amongst my favourites, it is the magewappa classic bento box which I got from Bento&Co. The make and finishing is amazing.
Contrary to popular belief, wooden bento boxes are pretty easy to maintain. I do however avoid too oil food and if need by, use wax paper and food containers when packing my bento. After use, I wash them with lukewarm water and gentle soap, and also let it air dry for at least 2 days before keeping it.
